Chin Surgery

Detail

Chin surgery is one of the cosmetic procedures designed to reshape the face by correcting problems such as a square jaw, short chin, or a recessed chin. Chin augmentation can help enhance the shape of the chin, as the size and shape of the chin significantly define the lower dimension of the face.

There are two surgical methods for chin augmentation

1.External Surgical Procedure
This method causes less pain, allows immediate eating, and results in an aesthetically pleasing shape. However, it leaves an external scar, albeit a very small one, hidden beneath the chin. If not closely observed, it will be nearly invisible. Stitches are used, and patients need to return to have them removed seven days after surgery.
2.Internal Surgical Procedure
This involves incisions made from the front lower gum, where a silicone implant is inserted and shaped before suturing the incision closed. The advantage is that the surgical scar is not visible since it is inside the mouth, but the downside is that there may be more swelling compared to external surgery, and eating can be more difficult initially. This method uses dissolvable stitches, so there’s no need for removal.
**The choice of surgical method depends on the doctor’s assessment**

Types of Chin Implants

1. Korean Silicone

This is a pre-formed silicone that is curved to fit the shape of the face, made of soft material that integrates well. There are various sizes available based on individual chin shapes.

2. Japanese Silicone

Similar to Korean silicone, it has a soft texture and is also pre-formed to fit the facial contour, with only slight differences in material and softness compared to the Korean type. Various sizes are also available.

Surgical Steps

1. An anesthetist will administer sedatives and local anesthesia to the patient, which helps minimize pain.
2. In the case of an external incision, the doctor will make an incision beneath the chin and insert the silicone implant into the desired position. For the internal incision, the cut will be made at the gum area adjacent to the lower lip, followed by lifting the chin bone’s membrane to place the silicone implant appropriately.
3. The incision will be closed with dissolvable stitches, taking about 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Post-Surgery Care

1. After the procedure, the doctor will place a plaster on the chin. For the first five days, clean the area around the face with cotton pads soaked in water. On the fifth day (counting from the surgery date), the plaster can be removed, and normal washing can resume.
2. The stitches used are dissolvable and located inside the mouth (these will dissolve in about 3-4 weeks).
3. Sleeping Position: Sleep with your face facing forward, using a pillow for about 7-14 days after surgery. Avoid sleeping on your stomach or side.
4. After the surgery, apply cold packs for the first 48 hours to effectively reduce swelling. Apply them to both cheeks (avoid applying directly to the chin). After 48 hours, switch to warm compresses until the swelling subsides.
5. Avoid spicy, hot, fermented, pickled foods, alcoholic beverages, and smoking for one month.
6. You may brush your teeth, but do so gently to avoid the incision. It is crucial to rinse your mouth every time after eating.
7. The final shape will be clear within one month.

**If a patient feels their chin appears asymmetrical before one month has passed, advise them that the true shape will become clearer around the one-month mark. They should wait until then and come for a follow-up appointment**
